A Sophisticated Solution To A Tricky Problem – CBDC Atrium

This ’mosaic’ feature stretches thirty-six metres up the atrium of the CBDC building, depicting the history of the UAE from the days of pearl-fishing to the present day.

The Challenge
The client challenged us to find an artistically pleasing solution to conceal an existing glass block wall designed by the original architect
CBDC Mosaic

The Solution

A 36-meter-long Frameless Mosaic Feature. We tend to avoid the use of frames and are continuously developing our own unique frameless solutions for individual challenges.  This frameless mosaic feature was built using coloured glass pieces cut into a mosaic pattern. The mosaic was then bonded to larger shaped panels of clear tempered glass. These panels were mounted on our own custom-designed stainless steel supporting structure for a stronger and more stable support for the mosaic artwork.

Finally, we strategically placed LED projectors to evenly backlight the feature, washing it in light from top to bottom for enhanced visual impact. The challenge with this aspect of the project was that the space we had to work with was limited to 300 millimetres between the glass block wall and the back of the mosaic feature.
